  • How I Moved To Mexico

A few years ago I decided I wanted to move to Mexico. I had been on long trips to different areas, including tourist hot spots like Cancun, but I had most enjoyed my time in the state of Oaxaca along the coast in Puerto Escondido. After falling in love with the town I had started spending my winters there trying to escape the cold of Massachusetts and taking advantage of the cheaper cost of living.

Eventually I decided to take the plunge and move their year round, after finding a nice house to buy I decided I needed to move all of my belongings from Mass to Peurto Escondido. This was the beginning of many hours of research trying to figure out exactly how the heck you go about moving that far of a distance across two countries.

I eventually decided to use a moving company that specialized in moves to Mexico. I got several quotes and probably talked for hours to the representatives, after all this was all my stuff we are talking about here, I had to be sure nothing was going to go wrong. I finally went with Mexico Moving Co because I was the most comfortable with them. They helped me create my menaje de casa, and advised me on the best way to get my FM3 with the least hassle. In the end moving to Mexico was easy for me, although not exactly cheap. The amount I paid though was worth it to know everything I owned was going to end up at my new house safely, and I knew it was not something I could do myself.

This is obviously the short version of the story but I have been living in Peurto Escondido for the past few years now, and I love it. If you have been thinking about taking a trip to Mexico I definitly recommend it, although be careful you may never want to leave!

    • I recently studied in Oaxaca de Juarez for 2 months on a study abroad program and I also fell in love with Mexico. I graduate college in a year and plan on traveling back to Mexico to live permanently. I plan to find a job first as an English teacher, but I would like to eventually work in community development with the small town pueblas.

I was hoping that you could give me some tips on the best way to get my FM3 and an idea about how much it costs to move there. I am not planning on moving a whole house or anything though. Renting is definately the plan.

    • Hi Cassandra,

You will want to start looking into your FM3 ahead of time, it can take a while to get through all the paperwork. The local consulate you go to may also have requirements, such as age or income, that don’t allow you to get an FM3. It’s worth checking out though of course, maybe you can find out online how it went for people at your local consulate.

Maybe you can get by with the FMT temporary visa, although if you are planning on working I believe that requires something else entirely, I don’t have much experience with that.

Moving is generally expensive and I wouldn’t suggest it if you can just rent a furnished place or buy a few things that you need to get by, it will also make moving around easier for you. You are probably looking at at least 4k in costs to move to mexico, even if you don’t have a lot of stuff.

      Good luck with your plans!

    • Thank you Admin. I will definately look into that. I appreciate the help. I will need a FM3 for sure. I am moving down there permanently and my boyfriend is looking for a fully furnished apartment for me and I have already gotten my TESL certifications, I just need to wait for the hiring season to come around.

Thanks again for all the help.
